Diabetes Week – what we’re doing in Wales
Diabetes UK Cymru is marking Diabetes Week by organising for every Welsh pharmacy to offer free Type 2 diabetes risk assessments. We have organised the campaign, which will run for a fortnight starting Monday 13 June, with Community Pharmacy Wales and the seven Health Boards. It is being supported by BMA Cymru, Public Health Wales and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
Using Diabetes UK’s Diabetes Risk Score assessment, pharmacists will assess people’s risk of developing the condition in the next 10 years by looking at risk factors such as family history, ethnicity, BMI and waist size. Those most at risk will be referred to their GP or practice nurse for a diabetes test.
We hope the campaign will help to identify the many thousands of people estimated to be living with undiagnosed Type 2 diabetes in Wales. Another aim is to encourage people who are at risk because of their lifestyle to lower their risk by leading healthier and more active lives.
Aside from the pharmacy campaign, we will be talking about diabetes with Welsh Assembly Members (AMs) in the Senedd in Cardiff Bay on Tuesday 14 May. Volunteers from across Wales will accompany us to the Senedd to share their experiences of living with diabetes with their AMs. We will also be marking the week with fundraising events in Cardiff.
On the first day of Diabetes Week, Sunday 12 June, we are hosting our annual Walk the extra mile event in Pontcanna Fields. People who prefer cycling to walking can also join in the fun on the day by taking on our first six-mile Magenta Bike Ride, which starts an hour before the walk.
And to finish off the week, we are asking people to get retro for Diabetes Week by joining us for our 70s Fancy Dress Disco Night in Whitchuch Rugby Club on Friday 17 June. People across Wales will also be marking the week with their own events, including hosting a Big Diabetes Week Quiz.

We hope it will prove to be our busiest and best Diabetes Week to date!
