My name is Joanna and I’m a 20-year-old student in Cardiff. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 4 and since then I’ve faced a lot of ups and downs with the condition! I’m currently being treated on a basal-bolus system with Lantus and Novorapid, taking 5 injections a day.
Diabetes has had a huge impact on my life growing up, as I’ve had to face many challenges and take more care of my health than other people my age. Although having diabetes has not restricted me in any way and I don’t think that being more careful health-wise is a bad thing, I, like everyone else, can have bad days where I feel disheartened by my blood sugars and the condition in general.
Overcoming difficulties and challenges is a major part, for me at least, of maintaining good control and being able to live the life that I choose to, not the life that diabetes chooses for me. In my future blogs I’ll be discussing some of the challenges I’ve faced over the years, such as managing diabetes once I’d moved out of home, explaining to new people what having diabetes means and the things I felt have helped me through the seemingly endless battle of blood sugars. I’ll also be talking about growing up with diabetes from a young age and the challenges that I’ve faced because of that.
I’d be happy to answer any questions and hear any comments from anyone with similar experiences, or anyone with an opinion about what I write!
